Twitter asks users to flag COVID-19 and election misinformation
Twitter unveiled a new testing feature on Tuesday that allows users to report misinformation they find on the platform, flagging it as "misleading." The trial will begin today for most users in the US, Australia and South Korea.
In the new test, Twitter users will be able to expand the three-dot context menu in the upper right corner of a tweet to select "report a tweet" where they will find a new option to flag a misleading tweet. ? If they choose politics, they can indicate if a misleading political tweet is election-related, and if they choose health, they can flag a misleading tweet, specifically about COVID-19.
Twitter added a way for users to previously report
election-related disinformation, although these capabilities were previously
temporary features tied to global elections. In 2019, the platform launched the
ability to report misleading voting tweets.
The goal is to enable users to expose tweets that violate Twitter's existing electoral and pandemic disinformation policy, two topics that it focuses on policy and enforcement efforts. The user messaging system will work with Twitter's proactive systems to detect potentially dangerous misinformation, which is based on a combination of human and automatic moderation.
For now, users will not receive any updates from the company about what is happening with the misleading tweets they report, although these updates may be added in the future.
While the new reporting feature will be widely available,
the company describes this test as an "experiment" rather than a
complete feature. Twitter will watch as people on the platform use the new
disinformation reporting tool to see if user reports can be an effective tool
for identifying potentially malicious misleading tweets, even though the
company doesn't have a set timetable for when to implement or remove them. Test it
completely. feature.
