With the release of iOS 14, Apple introduced an interesting
feature in Safari: live page translation. This translation allows us to alter
any web page we find to Spanish or other languages. Undoubtedly a very
interesting utility that allows you to inform or investigate regardless of the source
language.
Like most of the features that Apple adds to various
devices, it only takes two clicks to translate web pages. Of course, the first
time we have to activate the meaning. How? Very simple by touching the
corresponding icon in the address bar, but in parts.
The first article we need to do is update our Mac to macOS
Big Sur. After installing the update, we just need to visit the English website
and see if the icon with the letter A and a Chinese character appears at the
top of the window in the smart address bar next to the restart button.
If this does not happen, there is nothing we can do but wait
for this feature, which is currently in beta testing, to be activated for us;
if it appears, one click will open the doors to use it. On the initial click of
the mouse, the system will ask us if we want to activate this function and
will offer us certain information about it in the "Additional
Information" button. Among them is a notification that the feature is
still under development and in beta testing.
Two clicks - and all pages are translated automatically.
Once activated, the use process is very simple. When we find
a page in English or any other language, we simply click the button and select
"Translate into Spanish". Nothing more. From here we can navigate
through the different sections of the website and all pages will be
automatically translated. The function is disabled only if we go to another
domain using a link or through the address bar.
And go back to the original language version? One-click on
the same button allows us to select "View Original". Recall that if
we activate Reading Mode, this button disappears. In this case, it is enough to
deactivate the reader, transfer it, and, if we want, reactivate it.
In the same menu, we can also select Preferred Languages
... which will take us to System Preferences, wherewith the "+" in In the lower-left corner of the list of languages we can add the ones we want to
translate into. That is, we add the languages into which we can see the
translated content and not the languages from which we need to translate.
And nothing more. This feature is very easy to use. As for
the results, from the results of several days of tests, I can assure you that I
was quite surprised. The English-Spanish translation that I have tried the most
produces results that put this tool far ahead of Google Translate, although
perhaps not on the level that we would see in DeepL. Either way, being able to
touch a website button in Chinese and read it in Spanish is no doubt quite
impressive.
